In Wisla, two men are seen sitting on a bench in a grandstand—their habitus and the soundtrack conveying the crowd atmosphere at a soccer game give the impression that they are trainers in a stadium. But there is no shot of the playing field, and the reactions of the two men barely give any indications as to the state of the game, which they can’t influence anymore anyway. It is not until the end that the stadium of the Wisla soccer club in Kraków is shown to be empty and that there were neither teams nor a game. This non-fulfilment of the expectations learned from the media not only renders visible a ritualized code of behavior associated with the role of the male trainer, but also shows how sounds and referential gestures are enough on their own to generate a whole social event in the imagination.
